If your central heating is not working, it could be down to a loss of water pressure. The water pressure indicator on the front of your boiler should read between 1 and 2 bars of pressure. If it is below 1 then your boiler pressure is too low.

To top up your system and increase the pressure, you will need to locate your filling loop. This is usually a flexible silver hose with a small valve at each end, and you’ll find it either underneath your boiler or nearby.

  • Make sure the boiler is switched off and the system is cool.

  • The hose will have a valve at both ends – make sure the ends of the hose are securely attached to the valves.

  • The valves can be opened either by tap handles, or by using a flat headed screwdriver.

  • Open both valves, one after the other, to allow the cold mains water into the system.

  • You should hear water filling the system.

  • Watch the pressure gauge until it reaches 1.5 bar, then close both valves, one after the other.

Once the pressure is at the required level, switch the boiler back on and (if required) reset the boiler.

Fitting a new programmer and thermostat can make drastic savings to your fuel bills. Some old programmers leave the hot water heating up all day long(!) while others will heat the hot water whenever the radiators are on - these are both very inefficient. The new generation of programmers give you completely independant control of hot water and heating, meaning you're not wasting energy by heating water when you don't need it. In addition, new controls and thermostats can be wireless - making them very easy to fit, with no more wires and cables disturbing the decor around your house. Some systems can also be controlled while you're away from home via a smartphone app - see Honeywell Evohome for more information.

All boiler manufacturers require that the heating system is flushed and cleansed when fitting a new boiler, and it is especially recommended when replacing a cast-iron boiler. Failure to do this can invalidate the manufacturer's warranty. We offer a full flushing and cleansing service, using the Adey Magnacleanse system - visit the Adey website for a full explanation of the benefits of powerflushing.
